A fire burned about 3 acres of Sinking Creek Mountain in the Jefferson National Forest over the weekend.

“We don’t know, exactly, the origin,” said George Annis, incident manager for the National Forest Service. “Obviously it was human caused.”

The fire, in steep terrain behind the forest service’s Blacksburg shooting range west of Blacksburg, began Saturday night, Annis said.

Rain helped local volunteer fire departments control the fire, Annis said. firefighters revisited the site Monday and did not find any signs of a flare up.

The shooting range, which closed while firefighters fought the flames, reopened Monday afternoon.
