Feb. 2--Pizza delivery is an all-day running game on Super Bowl Sunday, and Midlands restaurants hope for impressive sales statistics.
Super Bowl Sunday is usually one of the three biggest days of the year for pizza orders in Columbia, said Gary Gonzalez, owner of all the Domino's Pizza outlets in the city, and several others in the Midlands.
The other two big days are New Year's Eve and the day before Thanksgiving.
"We will probably average close to 300 to 400 orders during Super Bowl Sunday," Gonzalez said. That number was for each of his 11 locations, and he expects many customers to order multiple pies.
Here are a few other statistics Gonzalez shared about Domino's pizza delivery game Sunday.
KICKOFF: The Super Bowl is an all-day event for pizza lovers, but orders start to surge around 3:30 p.m. and continue at a fast pace until halftime.
PLAYERS ON THE FIELD: Restaurants more than double their staffs to handle excess orders, meaning that stores might have 16 to 20 workers, instead of seven or eight on other Sundays.
SIGNING BONUSES: Gonzalez doesn't pay workers extra for working during the Super Bowl, but he sets out platters of food, and he keeps a TV on at the back of the store.
NECESSARY GEAR: Restaurants double the amount of food in stock, too. With 11 stores making more than 600 pizzas each, half 12-inch pies and half 14-inch, Gonzalez' stores need enough dough, cheese and toppings to cover about 676 square yards -- an area larger than an NFL end zone.
