Two new collagen-based dermal fillers, CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast, have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat facial wrinkles, acne scars and other minor cosmetic facial deformities, manufacturer Inamed Corp. says.
About one quarter of all of the protein in the human body is collagen. It forms molecular cables that strengthen the tendons and help support the skin and internal organs.
Animal collagen, which has been used as a wrinkle-smoother for many years, required a skin test to guard against a possible severe allergic reaction. Because the new products contain collagen found in human skin, neither single-visit injection requires a pre-treatment skin test, the company says. CosmoDerm is meant to treat superficial lines, while CosmoPlast is designed for more pronounced wrinkles.
Both products received Canadian government approval in December, Inamed says.
Here is the Inamed press release announcing the approval. For some background on how animal collagen has been used to treat facial wrinkles, visit the American Academy of Dermatology.
