News Advisory:

WHAT: State Energy and Regulatory Officials Call Upon Congress to Reject President's Budget for Low Income Energy and Energy Efficiency Programs

WHEN: Monday, Feb. 13, 1 p.m.

WHERE: National Press Club, Zenger Room, 529 14th Street, NW, Washington, D.C.

State energy officials will release an analysis of the President's Budget for energy efficiency and low income assistance programs on Monday, Feb. 13. They will be calling on the Congress to reject the President's budget for these programs and will be recommending an alternative budget plan.

State officials will also release a set of recommendations that build on existing state efforts to help the nation avert a potential crisis in the availability of affordable energy and support the growth of the nation's economy. In addition, state officials will discuss steps they are taking to address the nation's need for secure and affordable energy.

Of special concern to the states is that the President's budget does support even the modest programs and authorization levels that were approved in the recently passed Energy Policy Act.

Organizations that will be represented at the press conference include:

-- Eric Thumma, director, Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority, representing state energy policy and program directors

-- Jo-Anne Choate, director of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program for the State of Maine for the National Energy Assistance Directors' Association, representing state LIHEAP directors

-- Commissioner Ron Jones, chairman of the Tennessee Regulatory Authority for the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners representing state utility commissioners.

-- Robert Adams, director of Weatherization Services for the National Association of State Community Services Programs, representing state weatherization directors.
