ST. PETERSBURG. June 11 (Interfax-Northwest) – Nobel prize winners are to meet in St. Petersburg on June 16 through June 21.
“This meeting, unparalleled in the history of science, is timed with the tercentennial of the city, the tricentennial of modern science and the 170th anniversary of Alfred Nobel – a Swede who lived in St. Petersburg for many years,” Zhores Alfyorov, one of the organizers, told Interfax on Wednesday
Alfyorov, a prizewinner himself, said scientists from Belgium, Britain, Germany, Switzerland, the United States and Japan are planning to attend. The biggest delegation is coming from the United States – 12 Nobel prize winners in economics, physics, chemistry, physiology and medicine.
He said that the event is of tremendous significance for Russia, where the role and importance of science for advancing society in general and Russia in particular need to be stressed.
