Posted on: Tuesday, 14 February 2006, 00:00 CST

SARATOV. Feb 13 (Interfax) - Power generating unit No.1 at the Balakovo nuclear power plant in the Saratov region has been shut down for turbo-generator repairs, the nuclear power plant's press service has announced.

The turbo-generator was disconnected from the grid at 8:35 a.m. on February 11 to repair a switch. Repair work is expected to be finished soon, the press service said.

The shutdown procedures fully complied with safety regulations. The reactor remains loaded and is in operation.

"Radiation levels have not changed. The shutdown was no threat in terms of nuclear safety and is not covered by the INES international nuclear events scale," the press service said.

The Balakovo nuclear power plant has four VVER-1000 reactors. It was built in 1985-93. Its design capacity is 4,000 megawatts. The nuclear power plant reduced electricity production in 2005 by 1.6% against 2004, down to 28.8 billion kilowatt/hours.
