Feb. 16--Noise is expected to be cut in half once insulation is installed around the exterior air-conditioning equipment at Central High School in Aberdeen.
The school board this week gave the go-ahead to insulate the chiller unit on the north side of the school at 2100 S. Roosevelt St. Residents of the neighborhood have complained about the noise ever since the school opened in 2004.
The sound-deadening insulation and installation by Chiller Systems Inc. of Fargo, N.D., will cost $3,000, said Scott Sikkink, the district's director of buildings and grounds. Other options the district considered, such as building a wall around he chiller, were more expensive.
"It is still going to make noise, but this will put a big dent in that problem," Sikkink said.
Board President Brad Olson said others in the community who use the Chiller Systems product have told him they are pleased with the insulation and the company.
Also this week, the board:
-- Voted unanimously to direct Superintendent Gary Harms to execute an agreement with the city of Aberdeen for the district to give the city some Holgate Middle School property for the widening of 24th Avenue Northeast north of the school.
-- Unanimously approved various change orders for the Clark Swisher Activities Complex.
-- Unanimously approved donations of $5,000 from Nickelodeon to be used to enhance opportunities for physical activity at Simmons Elementary School and of a phone ear sound system valued at $1,345 from the Sertoma Club for use at Simmons Elementary.
-- Met in executive session to evaluate the performance of Harms.
-- Unanimously approved open enrollment applications for two students and public school exemption certificates for three students.
-- Unanimously approved increasing teacher Sherri Campbell's contract from half-time to full-time beginning with the 2006-07 school year.
-- Unanimously adopted various policy revisions and gave first reading to other policy revisions.
