Park to Get Picnic Shelter, Parking Remodel

Feb. 16--The North Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation Department is improving the parking area and adding a picnic shelter at McLean Park.

Parks and Recreation Director Don Campbell said the changes are necessary because people have been parking at all types of angles at the park, which has created congestion. He said building a small retaining wall will allow people to utilize all of the spaces available and bring organization and structure to how people park.

He also said there is a need for the new picnic shelter.

In addition to one already at the park, the new shelter will go where a roller hockey rink used to be, Campbell said.

The 10-acre park currently has a 2-acre lake, picnic tables and grills, a walking trail, a softball/baseball field, two tennis courts and restrooms.

Campbell said officials expect the projects to increase the usage of the park, making it more convenient and providing a new recreation opportunity.

Construction on the shelter is expected to begin early next month and be completed by the first of May. Workers have begun building the retaining wall for the parking area. Officials hope that project, which Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful has taken part in, will be done by April 1.

The organization is donating $1,000 it received from Palmetto Pride to the project, which Campbell said will be used for landscaping.

Campbell said officials expect the parking project to cost no more than $2,000. Funds for the $32,000 picnic shelter are coming from the parks and recreation department.
