Penobscot County Sheriff's Office Increases Winter Road Patrols

Feb. 16--CARMEL -- The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office plans to step up patrols in town after residents complained that ATVs and snowmobiles are damaging at least one road.

With little snow and with temperatures fluctuating -- freezing the ground one moment and thawing it the next -- residents on the Ash Hill Road said ATV users and those on snowmobiles are tearing up the road and ditches. Only part of the road is paved.

Town Manager Jim Collins said Wednesday that other roads have suffered because of the dramatic weather changes and that Carmel is not unique. But he also has gotten a half dozen complaints about the Ash Hill Road.

"There are some spots where running in and out of the ditches has hurt the base of the road and it's having a negative effect on the ditch line," Collins said. "They're kind of wearing down so that it's not going to handle the water as well."

Earlier this week, a few residents met with Chief Deputy Troy Morton of the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, which has a contract deputy specifically assigned to the town.

Although nature is partially to blame, Morton said the sheriff's office will be doing what it can to curb damage being done by ATVs and snowmobiles.

"We're going to spend more time there," Morton said of the Ash Hill Road area. Such additional attention is made easier because Carmel does have a contract with the sheriff's office, which provides for a Carmel deputy working 40 hours a week.

"This is an example of where it is useful and where we can direct him to that problem," Morton said.
