Feb. 16--Preliminary work has begun on the first water distribution line from the Elk Grove Water Service's new Railroad Water Treatment and Storage Facility.
The first phase of the project will focus on streets just south of the Camden area of Elk Grove - Mary Ellen Way, Polhemus Drive, La Haya Drive, Elk Grove Florin Road and Halverson Drive, the water agency reported.
Ultimately, the distribution project will supply nearly 1,000 Camden-area homes with water from the new railroad treatment plant.
At that point, rates are expected to stabilize in the Camden area as the district quits buying water for that area from the Sacramento County Water Agency, said Michael B. Kenny, general manager for the Elk Grove water agency.
The Camden area includes 1,000 homes between Bond and Sheldon roads, west of Elk Grove Florin Road.
The first phase of the distribution project is scheduled to be completed this fall at a cost of $1.2 million. Workers have begun marking utilities in roadways and, weather permitting, will begin excavations this month.
Residents just south of Camden can expect construction in front of each home for four to six days. Workers will install pipe and, where needed, replace curbs and gutters. Kenny says he expects this work to affect about 500 homes. Because Camden already has a water distribution system, there is no construction scheduled in that area.
