Hunting groups win a victory against antis
In September, hunting groups scored a victory against the Fund for Animals and other animal-rights groups.
Judge Ricardo Urbina of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia granted a motion filed by the U.S. Sportsmen's Legal Defense Fund, Safari Club International, and the U.S. Department of Justice asking that the Court dismiss a significant portion of a lawsuit brought by the Fund for Animals. The suit would threaten the expansion of hunting opportunities on National Wildlife Refuges around the country
In its lawsuit, the Fund argued that the government had violated the National Environmental Policy Act when it submitted to Congress its strategic plan with goals for the National Wildlife Refuge System. One of the goals of the Strategic Plan was to increase wildlife-related recreational opportunities, such as hunting, in the National Wildlife Refuge System. The antihunting groups claimed that the government was obligated to assume the huge task of preparing an Environmental Impact Statement to assess the environmental consequences of this goal before opening or expanding hunting on refuges. Judge Urbina dismissed the Fund's claim, stating that decisions regarding the use of the refuges, including hunting, are made at the individual refuge level.
