Pedestal CEO, an Alpine-based creator of steel gooseneck pedestals for the security industry, has decided to bring manufacturing in-house.
The company has leased 10,000 square feet at 3555 W. 1500 S., Salt Lake City, where it should be fully functional by mid- February, according to company president and founder Pike Goss.
"Our volumes have outgrown all of the vendor relationships in the valley, and we can't seem to get satisfactory service overseas," he said. "We started out making one model about three years ago and now we're into 16."
In addition to making its own line of steel gooseneck pedestals - on which cameras, keypads, card-readers, telephone systems and intercoms are typically mounted - Pedestal CEO also has launched a new division called The Metal Superhighway that will outsource the firm's metal design, fabrication and finishing services to others.
Goss said so many companies are dissatisfied with the prices and timeliness of local steel fabrication shops that The Metal Superhighway already has contracts in place to fulfill during the next year, fabricating items such as computer chassis, audio speakers, medical devices and home theater system enclosures.
"We're going to guarantee lead times on any product,"' Goss said of The Metal Superhighway, "which is unheard of right now in the industry, especially in Utah but even west of the Mississippi. We've got a design center where customers can walk in and we'll design their product free for them. We only know of one other place in the state of Utah that will actually fabricate metal and finish it under the same roof."
The growth of Pedestal CEO, which will move its corporate headquarters from Alpine to Salt Lake City, has prompted Goss to take on a partner in the business. Howard Ehlers, he said, is well known in the local metal fabricating industry.
Three people have been hired to launch the new fabrication shop, although Goss said he expects to employ 20 by the end of the year.
Pedestal CEO's products are carried by approximately 85 distributors in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
Goss said his new manufacturing plant will be out of the ordinary.
"I wouldn't say it's like a hospital, but in terms of cleanliness it's closer to that than it is to a metal fabrication shop," he said. "Everything is very clean, very business-oriented, very white collar. It's a very different take on what people are used to here in the valley. It's a culture we're establishing; it's much more than just another metal fabrication shop."
Pedestal CEO leased its Salt Lake City manufacturing facility with the assistance of Jeff Heaton of NAI Utah Commercial Real Estate.
