SHANGHAI, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- A China-European Union conference on energy sources opened on Monday in Shanghai, with the aim of promoting cooperation between the two parties.

More than 250 business people, government officials and institute experts attended the conference and discussed energy supply, renewable energy, energy-efficiency, security of nuclear energy and research into new energy sources.

The representatives also exchanged views on issues of clean energy, technology in economizing energy and continuous development of energy sources.

Ma Songde, vice minister of science and technology, said both China and the EU are facing problems of energy shortages and the two sides will benefit from further cooperation with each other in the sector.

The two sides signed a memorandum at the conference to jointly carry out a research project on treatment of carbon dioxide, which will be able to reduce the exhaust volume of carbon dioxide to zero in the air.

The conference, initiated in 1994, is jointly sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and the EU energy- traffic department.
