By Sarana Schell, Anchorage Daily News, Alaska

Feb. 20–The Pacific Rim Construction Oil and Mining Expo runs 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday in Anchorage’s Sullivan Arena.

The conference and trade show will feature some of the state’s premier industries. Oil, gas and mining activities kicked $7.3 billion into Alaska’s gross state product in 2004, according to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis released last fall; construction was worth $1.7 billion. Some 4,000 people are expected to attend the trade show this year, said organizer Sourdough Productions.

U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, is to speak on the health of the state’s energy sector as seen from Capitol Hill, 2 p.m. Thursday.

Other speakers include:

–Tom Irwin and Marty Rutherford, former state Department of Natural Resource officials, on what to watch for in state gas pipeline contract negotiations.

–Bill Van Dyke, state Division of Oil & Gas acting director, on the geologic potential of areas in North Slope and Beaufort Sea oil and gas lease sale land.

–Rick Fox, Shell’s new asset manager for Alaska.

–Danny Davis, Escopeta Oil and Gas chief executive, on Cook Inlet’s oil potential and jack-up rig status.

–Dave Houseknecht, U.S. Geological Survey, on Alaska’s natural gas potential.

–Blair Murphy, ConocoPhillips commercial manager, on developing Alaska’s natural gas, construction of a pipeline to the U.S. Midwest and other issues.

–Angus Walker, BP commercial vice president, on building a 50-year future in Alaska.

More than 200 exhibits are to showcase construction machinery, building materials, power generation, oil-field support, computer technology and more.

Details on contracting opportunities valued in the billions of dollars are also on the agenda, from work at Anchorage’s port and international airport to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Alaska projects.
