Oil shale reserves in the United States hold an estimated 800 billion bbls of recoverable oil.
Eight companies were chosen by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for oil shale research development and demonstration leases. Each company submitted proposals for developing oil shale tracts in three western states in an environmentally sound and economic manner. The eight companies' proposals were chosen from a field of 20 applicants, the BLM said. Each applicant responded to the agency's call for proposals for 65-hm2 (160-acre) research development and demonstration leases on public land in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. The proposals were evaluated by a team of representatives from the BLM, the Departments of Energy and Defense and the governments of the three states.
The eight companies chosen included Chevron Shale oil, Exxon Mobil, Shell Frontier oil and Gas, and EGL Resources, each with a parcel in Colorado. In Utah, the chosen applicants were oil-Tech and oil Shale Exploration. Shell Frontier oil and Gas actually had three separate nominations that were judged eligible. Each nomination identifies the 65-hm2 (160-acre) parcel allowed in the call for research development and demonstration. They also identify additional contiguous areas of 2,007 hm^sup 2^ (4,960 acres) that would be reserved for a preferential right to convert to a commercial lease after additional review by the BLM.
The United States' oil shale resources lie under an area of 41,435 km^sup 2^ (16,000 sq miles). The nation holds the largest concentration of oil shale in the world, holding an estimated 800 billion bbl of recoverable oil. More than 70 percent of the oil shale is on federal land in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.
