Feb. 24--Chewing gum giant Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co., maker of Juicy Fruit, Altoids and Life Savers, on Thursday announced plans to add about 200 jobs at its Hall County manufacturing plant as part of a $48 million upgrade.
The move -- expected since the Chicago-based company completed the acquisition of some of Kraft Foods' confectionery business assets this past June -- would bring total employment at the Flowery Branch facility to more than 1,000.
The company has already begun hiring new workers.
"We're posting and attending job fairs right now," said company spokesman Christopher Perille.
"We have already found 30 or 40 of the 200 people we plan to hire," he said.
The facility is Wrigley's biggest U.S. manufacturing plant.
The state put together an incentive package for the company worth more than $3 million, including various tax credits and training assistance, company officials said.
The capital improvements at the plant, which include new equipment for new product lines, are part of Wrigley's plan to beef up output, Perille said.
The plant, which already produces Eclipse, Doublemint, Extra and other gums, will add Altoids and Orbits to the mix in the upgrade, he said. It also will manufacture different gum ingredients.
"There's going to be a significant increase in production," he said.
The plant, adjacent to I-985, first opened in 1971 and has expanded several times.
