Countys Air Rates Poorly in Soot Content

A Pennsylvania environmental group has called Lancaster Countys air quality the fifth worst among mid-size cities in the nation for harmful soot. The Philadelphia-based PennEnvironment group noted the countys ranking in a 28-page report, Plagued by Pollution: Unsafe Levels of Soot Pollution in 2004. The report also said the county was one of 208 nationwide found last April to be in violation of federal limits for soot. Last year, the county was ranked sixth for harmful soot. The York-Hanover, Harrisburg-Carlisle and Reading areas also made the top 10 worst mid-size metro areas list. The report was released Thursday in Harrisburg. Experts say southcentral Pennsylvania
