Feb. 27--"USEC has taken cost-cutting measures, including work force reductions. These steps are expected to mitigate some, but not all, of the expected increase in power."
Elizabeth Stuckle, spokeswoman for USEC Inc., commenting on the impact of projected increases in the cost of power provided to the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
"They aren't the parking ticket Nazis. Parking is a serious problem."
Paducah Police Sgt. J.P. Roberts, referring to the department's plans to use citizen volunteers to enforce parking laws downtown.
"We just hate it, but there's nothing we can do."
Betty Dobson, co-founder of the Upper Town Heritage Foundation, offering a pessimistic view of efforts to save the 100-year-old Majestic Masonic Temple, located at the corner of Seventh and Adams streets in Paducah.
"I don't know if the holiday and the weather just made people stay at home and off the roads, if they were driving more carefully, or if they've just gotten used to driving on this stuff."
State Trooper Barry Meadows, speculating about the relatively small number of serious accidents reported during the snowstorm that hit the Purchase region the weekend before Presidents' Day.
"I talked to him when he was up here (Feb. 9), and he said he was going to stop talking about that. I'm disappointed."
State Sen. Ken Winters, R-Murray, referring to Murray State University Interim President Kern Alexander's verbal attacks on Finance Secretary Robbie Rudolph.
"The day of the strong back and the weak mind in any manufacturing plant has gone by the wayside."
Paul Friedlander, director of the Paducah Career Center, explaining that industrial jobs now are filled by highly skilled workers.
