Composting Fears

I have grave fears about the council promoting organic home composting (Feb 18). Proper composting is a labour- intensive art that needs commitment and space; and if a family is unable to commit to recycling packaging it is unlikely they would do composting well. In many cases the resulting pile of rotting waste would breed flies as well as feed rats.

Christchurch already has a sewerage system that seems an ideal organic disposal system. Surely we should at least consider dealing with household biosolids in one central place via our existing sewers and, in one stroke, enable more methane and therefore electricity to be generated as well as avoid the public health dangers posed by huge populations of flies and rats. Shouldn’t we consider promoting the use of insinkerators and an upgrade of our biosolids treatment facility to cope?
