Feb. 28--WHITING -- BP's U.S. Refinery Independent Safety Review Panel will meet with residents, employees and any other interested parties tonight to discuss safety concerns at the company's local refinery.
The panel was developed on the recommendation of the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard board after its investigation of BP's March 2005 Texas City Refinery accident, which took the lives of 15 contractors.
The 11-member panel was appointed as an independent review board to access and make recommendations for the improvement of safety management and safety culture at the companies five U.S. refineries. It is chaired by former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker.
Beside holding the open meeting today, the panel will tour the local refinery and have an internal meeting with its management on process safety and the culture of safety issues, said Whiting Refinery spokesman Thomas Keilman.
The Whiting Refinery is the third to be visited by the panel. After all five BP refineries are visited, the panel will issue a document on its findings that will include any safety recommendations it makes, Keilman said.
"Obviously, from the refinery's perspective, the safe operation of the refinery is our number one priority," he said. "We feel we have a strong safety culture and record, and we look forward to the panel's review."
IF YOU GO: Open to the public 7 p.m. today Whiting City Hall, 1443 119th St.
