Cluff Gold Announce the Completion of Follow Up Trench Sampling at Angovia Gold Prospect, Cote D'Ivoire
Posted on: Friday, 3 March 2006, 15:00 CST
Cluff Gold Plc (LSE: CLF) today announced the completion of its follow up trench sampling programme at the Angovia Gold Project in Cote d'Ivoire, and also that site preparation is underway at the Baomahun Gold Project in Sierra Leone, in advance of the drill programme scheduled to commence in April 2006.
Cote d'Ivoire:
Highlights:
-- Fourteen trenches cleaned and re-sampled and assay results received from six trenches so far -- five trenches intersected significant mineralisation -- Initial trench results identify new mineralised structures close to known deposits -- results have identified some notably high grade areas, including 36 metres grading 8.55 g/t Au and 14 metres grading 2.31 g/t Au -- Additional follow up trenching is underway
Initial trench results received from three of the satellite deposits, which intersected encouraging results, are outlined below.
Trench From To Apparent Grade Notes (m) (m) Width (m) g/t AT 36 28 64 36 8.55 Includes 4m @ 70.15g/t Au 78 92 14 1.15 AT 21bis 48 60 12 1.03 End of trench -- to be extended * AT 22 64 78 14 2.31 End of trench -- to be extended * AT 47 10 28 18 0.57 AT 26 62 90 28 0.80 34 46 12 0.55 6 22 16 0.55 * Trenches ended in mineralisation
The cleaning and re-sampling of the trenches focused on structures on three satellite deposits. The structure picked in AT 36 is approximately 500 metres south and along strike of Prospect 4. Drill results from Prospect 4 announced last year included holes ARC 008 and 024, which intersected 21 metres grading 8.95 g/t Au and 30 metres grading 3.64 g/t Au respectively.
The map below shows the Angovia project and the trench locations:
These trenches were excavated by BRGM between 1987 and 1990, prior to COGEMA taking over the license. The data purchased by Cluff Gold did not contain records of the trenches, some of which were only partially covered by COGEMA's mining activities. Cluff Gold re-discovered the trenches through analysing old BRGM maps of the region, which highlighted anomalous gold values, as well as through talking to people with historical knowledge of the area.
Douglas Chikohora, Technical Director of Cluff Gold plc, comments, "We are delighted to report these preliminary trench results which are consistent with SRK consultants' recent conclusions that the licence has a resource potential of the order of 800,000 ounces. Trench AT 36 appears to have opened up a possible high-grade southern extension of Prospect 4, which could significantly increase both the oxide and sulphide resources of Angovia. Follow up trenching is underway to evaluate the strike length and nature of the mineralisation. This will be followed by drilling with the objective of increasing the resource base of the project."
Sierra Leone:
Cluff Gold also announced today that site preparation is underway at Baomahun in Sierra Leone in order to prepare for the planned drilling programme due to commence in April 2006.
In a recent report submitted to the Company by the Toronto based mining consultant, L.R. Kilpatrick Associates Inc ("LRK"), the following conclusion was reached: "LRK believes that the Baomahun Project offers very good potential for the discovery of a high-grade multi-million ounce gold deposit, and we highly recommend additional exploration on this property." As mentioned in the release issued dated 27th February 2006, the Company will be undertaking a multi-faceted programme working towards increasing the resource estimate at Baomahun.
Notes to Editors:
Mt. Yaoure, Cote d'Ivoire
The Mt. Yaoure permit is located 40km northwest of Yamoussoukro, the political capital of Cote d'Ivoire, and covers a surface area of 534km^2. The licence area includes the Angovia gold mine, which operated between 1998 and 2003. The mine reportedly produced over 180,000 ounces of gold during this period by heap leaching some 2 million tonnes of oxide material. The Cote d'Ivoire government has issued a certificate to CMA, a subsidiary of COGEMA, the French uranium-mining group, evidencing that it has complied with the work prescribed by the mining regulations relating to the protection of the environment and the restoration of the part of the licence area covered by the Angovia gold mine.
The infrastructure in the area is good and includes a hydroelectric dam six kilometres from the Angovia mine site.
About Baomahun:
Baomahun is located about 180 km east of the capital, Freetown, in the Southern Province of the country and the geological setting is similar to the Lake Victoria goldfields in Tanzania. Cluff has a right to earn a 60% interest in Baomahun by funding the project to the completion of a bankable feasibility study or to a maximum of US$5 million. This right is to be acquired from Winston Mines which owns the two exploration licences relating to Baomahun, covering an area of approximately 137 km^2.
