Mar. 4--Westbound traffic on the West Shore Bypass and traffic on nearby Lancaster Avenue was snarled for about an hour Friday morning after a series of accidents.
The first crash occurred about 7:50 when a westbound car driven by Brittany Hill, 19, Exeter Township, struck the rear of a car that had slowed as the driver approached the ramp from Lancaster Avenue, police said.
Police gave the following account:
The other car was driven by Thomas Franek, 58, Exeter Township.
Franek had slowed to let a vehicle merge from the ramp when Hill's car hit his. One westbound lane was closed and the ramp was closed.
The closures backed up traffic in the area.
About 8:15 a.m., a four-vehicle, chain-reaction accident occurred in the 200 block of Lancaster Avenue in the direction of center city.
A pickup truck driven by Joshua Kightner, 25, Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, struck the rear of a slowing car driven by Samuel Sager, 48, Cumru Township. Sager's car struck a stopped car operated by Santo Fuoco, 83, Millmont, which hit a stopped car operated by Lewis Blackburn, 73, Reading. Sager refused medical attention at the scene. The others were not hurt. A hit-and-run accident was reported about the same time on the bypass. There were no injuries, police said. Further details were not available.
