Nominate a Cop for Fencl Award

Mar. 6--Whether they're on foot, on bikes or riding in patrol cars, district cops spend their days and nights submerged in your neighborhood.

They protect your children, keep an eye on corner stores, chase after bad guys and respond to your calls, whether your problems are big or small.

They do their jobs with little attention or fanfare, save for a mumbled "thank you" here or there. But you can help us honor one of the city's unsung heroes by nominating a Philadelphia Police officer for the 2006 George Fencl Award.

The Fencl Award is bestowed upon an officer whose career is distinguished by his or her ability to mix kindness, toughness, empathy, dedication and civic commitment.

The award, now in its 21st year, is named after the late Civil Affairs inspector who admirably guided the unit through the turbulent 1960s and '70s. The award also carries a $1,000 prize.

Officer Darlene Chapman-Cummings, last year's recipient, said winning the award is "the most prestigious feeling in your life."

Chapman-Cummings, a nine-year veteran, spends her days educating school children on the dangers of drugs, alcohol, violence and gangs as a member of the department's Community Relations Division.

Chapman-Cummings also runs People Achieving Positive Attitudes, a non-profit organization that shuttles children to after-school activities.

"We don't do what we do for an award or reward, so actually getting [the Fencl Award] is phenomenal," she said.

"There are no words to describe that feeling. It's like being a star for a day."
