Sally Ride Science and Education Unlimited Expand Popular Girls' Science Camp to UCLA Campus

Posted on: Tuesday, 7 March 2006, 18:00 CST

Education Unlimited(R) and Sally Ride Science(TM) are pleased to announce that they will be expanding their innovative Sally Ride Science Camps for girls to the UCLA campus this summer. Sessions of the program will once again be offered at Stanford University, UC Berkeley and the University of San Diego.

Sally Ride Science Camps and Education Unlimited, Inc. offer girls entering grades 6 - 9 the opportunity to explore science and have fun in an inspiring environment. The overnight programs, now in their fourth year, provide the perfect venue for middle school girls to deepen their interest in science, meet other girls with similar interests, and be introduced to female role models pursuing science and engineering careers. The camps are expected to serve more than 500 girls with a six-to-one student to staff ratio. Sally Ride will talk with the girls through conference call or video-conference at many sessions. Session dates and prices vary by location and age-group.

"We're excited to add UCLA to the list of Sally Ride Science Camp locations which will enable us to provide even more girls with science experiences that are fun and relevant," said Sally Ride, founder of Sally Ride Science. "Empowering girls to explore their interests in science can only have a positive influence on the workforce of the future."

"Initial indications lead me to believe that many thousands, or even tens of thousands, of middle school girls and their families are very interested in attending a program exactly like the Sally Ride Science camps for girls," says Matthew Fraser, CEO of Education Unlimited. "The addition of this camp is a critical part of our effort with Sally Ride Science to extend the availability of this valuable program to as many young women as possible."

Julia Saper, a former camper, loved the hands-on activities at the camp. "Our labs were always amazing -- from studying sun spots with a rocket scientist to creating a scale model of the solar system across the entire campus to riding a 'Segway,'" she said. Brittany Cheng, a 2005 camper, said: "I've been attending Sally Ride Science Camps for three years and it gets better every year."
