Mar. 7--It's a pity that Coastal Carolina University's men's basketball team lost its bid for the Big South Conference championship -- and an NCAA tournament automatic bid -- by a single point on Saturday. Winthrop University returns to the tournament instead, by virtue of a clutch layup in the waning seconds of the game.
But as the 51-50 outcome attests, Coastal likely will be contesting for the conference title again. In his first year, coach Buzz Peterson has turned a mediocre program into a winning program. From midseason on, Coastal's young men have been virtually unstoppable on the court. Winthrop, which had home-court advantage, was fortunate to escape the game with a victory.
Unless Coastal wins a bid to this month's National Invitation Tournament -- an honor the team richly deserves -- the long offseason now begins. The team's stellar performance this season gives Peterson an edge in recruiting strong young players to bolster the team's arsenal of skills -- portending another strong performance next season and beyond. Coastal's increasing prowess in intercollegiate athletics -- not just basketball, football and baseball, but also in golf and soccer -- makes the university's presence in our communities all the sweeter.
