Mar. 8--Expect some fabulous fare at Schoolcraft College's upcoming VisTa Gala. After all, some of metro Detroit's best chefs come from the Livonia school's nationally known culinary program.
It's not your usual sit-down dinner. Most of the 11 courses will be served in the school's instructional kitchens, so guests can watch the teaching staff and students at work, talk to the chefs and even go back for seconds. (Seated service is also available.)
Drawings will be held for extravagant prizes, and the evening will end with an auction for a five-course dinner for 50 with wine, at the school's American Harvest Restaurant.
The gala is March 25. Tickets are $150. Profits will benefit the culinary arts program. Call 734-462-4400, Ext. 5008.
Bangladeshi in the suburbs
Six years after opening in Hamtramck, Aladdin restaurant is bringing its menu of home-style Bangladeshi cuisine -- similar to Indian food -- to Farmington Hills, opening Saturday at 13 Mile and Orchard Lake, says Niaz Khan, one of the owners.
The new Aladdin Sweets and Cafe, next door to 7-Eleven, will seat about 50. The menu uses Halal meats and offers dishes such as tikka masala, chicken korai (a drier chicken curry) and motor paneer (peas and cheese). For the first week, guests will receive a free appetizer and dessert, and carryout orders will be discounted 20%. Call 248-254-1667.
Arby's debuts 'all-natural' chicken
Stop into any Arby's Thursday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and you can get one free chicken tender and dipping sauce -- part of the company's national roll-out of its Arby's Chicken Naturals line.
The company is the first fast-food chain to convert every chicken item on its menu to "all-natural" chicken, which it defines as meat "not altered or injected with added salt, water or phosphates."
