More than 300 business and education leaders attended a recent summit at the Pacific Palms Conference Center, to help address the critical shortage of K-12 math and science teachers. The March 2 event was hosted by the California State University and sponsored in part by the Majestic Realty Foundation.
"Both President George W. Bush and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger have made it clear that recruitment of math and science teachers should be a priority," said Fran Inman, president of the Majestic Realty Foundation. "By sponsoring this important summit, the Majestic Realty Foundation is expanding its commitment to youth and education. We believe education is the foundation of creating the leaders of tomorrow, and nowhere is that more important than in the math and science fields."
At the summit, the CSU launched its Math and Science Teacher Initiative, which will lay the groundwork for recruiting and training more, and better-prepared, math and science teachers. The CSU has committed to double the production of math and science teachers by the year 2010.
Speaking at the event, CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed said he hoped the event would "help identify specific strategies to recruit and train more math and science teachers and increase the number of students who take advanced science and math courses in high school."
Eight CSU presidents presented their perspectives on challenges and solutions to significantly expanding the math and science teacher education program.
"This is a critical issue for keeping our future workforce strong in California," Inman said. "With this in mind, The Majestic Realty Foundation and the Majestic Realty Co. are pleased to be on the forefront of the CSU's Math and Science Teacher Initiative."
Established in 2002, the Majestic Realty Foundation provides grants and other support to various charitable community partners that work the areas of youth, family, education, and health and violence prevention in the communities where Majestic Realty Co., one of the nation's leading private commercial real estate developers, does business.
