FOOD & DRINK PACKAGING & MACHINERY: MAP's a Gas

Posted on: Monday, 13 March 2006, 06:00 CST

NITROGEN gas generators that produce food-grade nitrogen from compressed air are delivering a range of benefits when used in modified atmosphere packaging, says filtration specialist Domnick Hunter.

"I have witnessed considerable growth in the use of on-site nitrogen generators, with the food industry now representing by far the largest market share," said Niall Sutton, market sector manager, Gas Generation division.

Nitrogen is the most common gas used to extend shelf life without additives or artificial preservatives as it is completely inert, tasteless and odourless. It helps prevent oxidation, mould in baked goods, microbial and insect spoilage. Different gas mixes can be required for different foodstuffs and Domnick Hunter says its generators can be configured with gas mixers to provide a much more economic solution than pre-mixed gas cylinders.

The generators use the Pressure Swing Adsorption principle and PSA nitrogen is "a fraction of the cost of bulk liquid nitrogen and gas cylinders", cuts out the need for storage and reduces handling, says Sutton. "Generators can be likened to an everlasting cylinder, providing an uninterrupted, reliable and safe source of nitrogen, 24 hours a day."
