A NORTH Wales man who left school with just three O levels is tipped to become one of Britain's leading scientists.
Keith Hughes has just been made lecturer in theoretical and quantum chemistry at Bangor university.
When the 35-year old left his Y Felinheli school nearly 20 years ago he hated science and headed for the Army instead.
After four years as a paratrooper he realised a career meant education.
So Keith returned to North Wales and followed a science and technology access course at Coleg Menai. After graduating he studied for a PhD degree and was appointed as a post-doctoral researcher at Texas university.
He said yesterday: "I am in my element teaching and researching chemistry and am delighted to be able to move back to the area with my family."
Keith has been awarded one of only four prestigious Ramsay Memorial Fellowships.
