Mar. 14--The Sycamore Land Trust is seeking volunteers interested in planting young trees Saturday in two locations -- a neighborhood arboretum in Marlin Hills and a 68-acre preserve along Bean Blossom Creek in northwest Monroe County.
In Marlin Hills, volunteers and neighbors have joined together to develop a demonstration arboretum on Audubon Drive. Plans call for planting up to 100 species of trees and shrubs native to Indiana. The arboretum is on 1 1/2 acres of land given by the late Charlotte Ghurye.
The tree-planting event is from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the north acre of the site, between 507 and 601 Audubon Drive.
On the Powell Preserve, volunteers will plant 700 saplings where a hayfield once grew. A grant from the National Audubon Society made this forest restoration project possible.
Volunteers headed to the Powell Preserve will meet at 9 a.m. and carpool from the parking lot of Bloomington's Marsh store at 1825 Kinser Pike.
People are encouraged to wear boots and heavy gloves and to bring clippers and shovels. Tools, lunch and beverages will be provided. Planting will continue until about 3 p.m.
If you're interested in volunteering, call the land trust at 336-5382.
