Texas Governor Announces Decision to Build Energy Project on 1 of 2 Sites

Mar. 15--Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced Tuesday the selection of two sites as finalists for a $1 billion energy project.

Perry selected sites near the East Texas town of Jewett and Odessa in West Texas to compete for the state's bid for the U.S. Department of Energy's FutureGen project, which would convert coal into natural gas with near-zero emissions.

Jewett, which is between Bryan and Waco, sits on an abundant supply of lignite, which would be used in the project.

In Odessa, the hydrogen that is a byproduct of the process could be used in the petrochemical industry.

The state must submit its final proposal to the energy department by May 4.

The Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission declined to submit a proposal for the project because there is no coal supply readily available.
