Coast Guard Checks Possible Oil Spill in Seattle

March 17, 2006

SEATTLE (Reuters) – The U.S. Coast Guard said on Friday it is investigating a possible spill of oil or fuel that is creating a sheen on the water in Seattle’s Elliott Bay.

Television footage taken from helicopters showed a large sheen in the bay. Coast Guard Petty Officer Adam Eggers said there was no immediate information about the size, source or composition of the sheen.

The spill was first reported by a tugboat and then confirmed by another vessel and four planes that flew over the bay, the Coast Guard said.

Eggers said investigators are trying to determine what type of product is causing the sheen.
