Move to Protect Wildlife

THE white-tailed eagle, the wildcat and the red squirrel could be set for greater protection in Scotland.

The three animals have been included among 23 Scottish species which require greater conservation, Scottish National Heritage said yesterday.

The agency also called for the possible reintroduction of native species which have died out.

Deputy Environment Minister Rhona Brankin said: “People care deeply about wildlife and want to be involved in protecting it.

“The future make-up of Scotland’s natural landscape is in our hands and this consultation presents everyone with a unique opportunity to protect our important natural heritage.”

She added: “Our habitats and wildlife are rich and diverse. Not only do we need to protect what we already have, but we need to assess species at risk and consider what we need for the future.

“We also need to determine which former species missing from our current landscape might be re-introduced.”

Other animals in danger include capercaillie, black grouse and the European beaver.
