Mar. 23--ELK RIVER 75, WOODBURY 67
Woodbury never led in its Class AAAA quarterfinal game against Elk River, getting close a handful of times before the Elks pulled away for a 75-67 victory Wednesday at Target Center.
Tyler Macomber scored 19 of his 29 points in the second half, and Sam Halverson had 23 to help the Elks (27-3) earn a berth in today's semifinals against Robbinsdale Cooper. Halverson had 18 points to power the Elks to a 35-24 halftime lead.
Woodbury (21-9) twice pulled to within two points in the opening minutes of the second half, and to within 47-46 after a three-pointer by Nico Holmes with 11:52 remaining.
"We knew we could get going, it was just a matter of time," Holmes said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't get any closer. Each time we got close, they'd answer and pull away. That was frustrating."
The Elks answered with an 18-10 run to build a 65-56 lead with 4:37 left after Jackson Beaudoin made two free throws. But the Royals made one last gasp, pulling to within 67-63 with 2:32 remaining after two free throws by Eddie Schauer.
"We knew they'd come after us in the second half," Macomber said. "We just had to remain poised and calm. I think we did a good job of that."
