Man Found Hanged on VFW Flagpole is Identified

Posted on: Thursday, 23 March 2006, 18:00 CST

By Greg Kocher, The Lexington Herald-Leader, Ky.

Mar. 23--Winchester police today identified the man found hanged Wednesday at the base of a VFW post flagpole as Bobby Hall Jr., 35, of Lancaster.

Hall worked for a Winchester construction company, said Winchester Police Detective Harold Jones.

Jones said police were able to find a telephone number in "rental documentation" for the employer, who in turn told police that Hall has a sister in Lancaster. Jones didn't know details about how police came by that documentation.

It is unknown whether Hall, who was single, had any past military service, Jones said. "We're trying to check to see whether he has any military background," he said.

Hall's body was found at the base of of the VFW Post 2728 flagpole early Wednesday, just a couple of hours after the post's American flag had been burned.

Police believe Hall had burned the flag because there were "burn marks" on his clothing, Jones said.

Meanwhile, Jones said that police have not ruled out a connection between Hall's death and the death of a 52-year-old man found inside an efficiency apartment next door to the VFW post.

"We're not going to discount any theory or hypothesis at this time," Jones said. "We're going to take our time with it and make sure that we don't leave any stone unturned."

Jones said police still don't suspect any foul play in the death of the man found Wednesday afternoon in Apt. 24 of Thoroughbred Efficiency Apartments, which is next door to the VFW post.

"Given the proximity of the location, that's an unusual thing to happen within that time period," Jones said. "Two deceased bodies within that close a proximity. That's unusual and rare, so automatically that gives you a possibility that they might know each other or something. So we're talking to everybody we can talk to."
