Kota Damansara Forest Reserve Turned into Community Forest Park

KUALA LUMPUR: The remaining forest reserve at Kota Damansara here has been turned into a community forest park, which is said to be the first of its kind in the country.

Sungai Buloh Forest Reserve, now known as Kota Damansara Community Forest Park, was reputedly the oldest forest reserve in the peninsula.

It will now be managed and organised by the local communities there.

Towards this, the residents associations of Kota Damansara, Bandar Utama, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Selangor Polo and Equestrian Centre (SPEC) and Tropicana Country Resort with the support of the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), formed a coalition called Friends of Kota Damansara.

They have been urging the authorities to gazette the land as a forest reserve since three years ago.

"We worked hard to preserve the Sungai Buloh Forest Reserve and to protect it from further development," said Friends of Kota Damansara president Leong Kam Heng at the launch of the Kota Damansara Community Forest Park yesterday.

Occupying an area of 3,900 acres until development reduced it to just 857 acres, the forest park boasts of various animal species, plants, natural waterfall and a lake.

Leong said that as there has already been so much of development in the Klang Valley, a forest reserve is what the residents need for a balanced development.

The forest park, sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environment Facilities (GEF), will be used for purposes such as education, recreation and conservation.

A management plan that provides a direction for planning, building, maintenance of infrastructure, overall development and management of the forest reserve has been done by the Friends of Kota Damansara towards a better organisation of the park.

"Future generations should be given a chance to admire the beauty of nature as we do not want them growing up only to find nature in places such as Taman Negara only," said MNS president Datuk Dr Salleh Mohd Nor.

"All of us have the responsibility of working together and giving our support to save this ancient forest."

Also present were GEF/Small Grants Programme national coordinator Dr Martin Abraham and Kota Damansara Section 7 residents association president Datuk Zainuddin Tahir. - By LIM LIU TZE
