Mar. 27--After mild days and jacket weather at night, South Florida will be easing into warmer weather as the week progresses.
Temperatures dipped into the low 50s early Sunday. At 50 degrees, Fort Lauderdale was a touch warmer than the record low of 45 set in 1947.
Miami's low of 52 also was warmer than the record low of 46, also set in 1947.
But a low of 47 at Palm Beach International Airport early Sunday broke the old record of 48 set in 1979.
By the end of the week, we can expect lows in the upper 60s and highs in the low 80s, according to the National Weather Service.
"We're not looking at temperatures this cold at least for the rest of the week," said meteorologist Tom Warner. "It's going to be a slow warm-up for the coming week."
Sunday's high, in the low 70s, was just right for Dre Mullins, 20, who joined a group of friends at Hollywood beach to grill a feast of chicken, steak, sausage and hamburgers, with sweet-potato pie for dessert.
"It's a nice day to be outside," said Mullins, of Hollywood. "It's better than the summer. When it gets too hot, I'll be inside watching basketball with my central air."
Jeanne Smith, of Dania Beach, donned a long-sleeve shirt for her daily walk on the Broadwalk. "The weather lately has been great," she said. "It's the best time of the year. . . . In May it gets humid."
The whipping wind pulled 6-year-old Abby Lockard's blue-and-yellow kite along the shore. She spent the afternoon playing in the sand and even went for a dip in the chilly ocean.
"It was fun and cold," she said, shivering under a gray hooded sweat shirt.
