Mar. 27--The Yuma Police Department is inviting parents to learn more about life at elementary school.
Two officers from the School Services Unit will be presenting information Tuesday on gang awareness, drug recognition and bullying during a Title 1 Parent Night from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ron Watson Middle School gym, 9851 E. 28th St., according to YPD spokesman Clint Norred.
"The School Services Unit does presentations on a regular basis, but I don't know if they've done something in this fashion with this large of a target audience," he said. "They're going to cover three very broad topics."
YPD encourages parents in the vicinity of Otondo, Desert Mesa and Sunrise elementary schools and Castle Dome Middle School to attend. Norred said fliers were sent home with children who attend these schools. The event is open to the public.
Title 1 programs are federally funded through the No Child Left Behind Act and are geared toward students from lower-income families who are having problems in school.
Norred said the issues to be covered during the presentation are those that every parent needs to be aware of. "Parents have to keep up with changing times of the world," he said.
Anyone with questions about the event can contact Norred at 373-4715.
