Demarco in Fresh Nuclear Power Row ENERGY: DEBATE

By Paul Dalgarno

ART impresario Richard Demarco is facing fresh controversy over his links with the nuclear power industry.

The Edinburgh-based 75-year-old, who freely admits to supporting nuclear energy, is lined up to speak to teenagers at Dunbar Grammar School about the convergence of science and art.

Demarco was criticised for his relationship with the nuclear industry last month, after staging a massive film installation at the Torness power plant.

This Tuesday's event, described as a "follow-up" to the film project, has been organised by British Energy, which runs the Torness plant and currently sponsors an art and design project for third and fourth-year pupils at the school.

"I'll be speaking to the children about the importance of working with nuclear scientists if they are artists so that the arts and the sciences come together, " said Demarco.

"I want to ask the big question of how we are going to get the energy of the future - is it going to be wind farms or is it going to be nuclear energy?

"I think the answer is going to be nuclear."

The artist and promoter is also in talks to accompany the pupils on a tour of the plant at a later date, when he will again discuss science and art.

But last night, campaigners questioned Demarco's involvement in the talks. Kate Hudson, chairwoman of CND, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said: "If children are going to be informed of the debate then they must hear both sides of the story."
