Mar. 28--A city judge is challenging Associate Judge Paul Beard in the November election. Deborah Mitchell, 52, of Sedalia, filed for probate judge Monday on the Democratic ticket. Mrs. Mitchell is also running for re-election as Sedalia municipal judge. However, she said she would resign from the city position if elected probate judge. "I have been thinking about it for awhile," Mrs. Mitchell said. "This is a big decision." The election is Nov. 7 and today is the last day to file. Mrs. Mitchell said she researched state law before filing and found it is legal to run for a city and county office simultaneously. Mrs. Mitchell said she concentrates on family and probate law in private practice, which qualifies her for the county seat. She is also a certified mediator, assisting families that are going through divorce or other conflicts. "Mediation doesn't always work, but when it does, families can certainly benefit by solving their problems before they have to go to court," Mrs. Mitchell said while speaking to friends and family at the Pettis County Courthouse. The probate judge handles cases of divorce, guardianship, conservatorship, administration of wills, trusts and other issues of family law. She has served five terms as municipal judge starting in 1996. Mrs. Mitchell said her life's experiences also qualify her for the job, including working with the Children's Therapy Center and experiencing divorce and other probate issues in her family. "This would be a good change for me," Mrs. Mitchell said. mbird-meyer @sedaliademocrat.com
