City switches garbage collectors
GONZALES – After more than 20 years with the same garbage collection service, the city of Gonzales switched companies Monday, taking the low bid offered by Acadian Waste Disposal of Ascension Parish.
Allied Waste Services, formerly Browning-Ferris Industries, was the city’s longtime garbage collection service.
According to city records, Allied Waste was the highest bidder of three, with a bid of $20.84 per household per month while Acadian Waste Disposal’s bid was $13 per household per month. The third bidder was SweeDiee at $17.60.
Gonzales City Clerk Clay Stafford said Monday that the switch to Acadian Waste Disposal will save the city more than $200,000 a year.
The city pays for garbage-pickup service with proceeds from a half-cents sales tax that Gonzales voters approved in 2001.
Before the bidding, the city was negotiating with Allied Waste Services to keep the service.
The new contract with Acadian will begin May 1 with twice-a-week garbage collection service and once-a-week recycling collection, Stafford said.
