Plastic is Turning Me into a Bag Lady...

Posted on: Tuesday, 28 March 2006, 18:00 CST

THIS IS a picture of me (right) with just one week's plastic wrappings from my family's weekly food shopping. I sent the picture to the big supermarket chains - Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Tesco, Asda and Marks Spencer - to see if any of them would react in a positive way by offering consumers a choice of the type of packaging they could select to use.

Consumers should be able to choose how they want to wrap up their shopping and not just be offered plastics. We live in an age when strawberries are packed in plastic rather than cardboard punnets, and the brown paper bags once widely used are no longer an option when buying fruit and veg.

Let the consumer choose how fresh fruit and veg is packaged. For a start, bring back brown paper bags as an alternative - a simple step but one in the right direction.

If that works, retailers should introduce environment-friendly packaging across other ranges and cut out the needless waste we all seem to accept without thinking.
