Kazakhstan Might Build First Nuclear Power Plant By 2015

Posted on: Tuesday, 28 March 2006, 18:00 CST

ASTANA. March 28 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan might build its first nuclear power plant by 2015, said Nesipkul Bertisbayev, head of the Kazakh Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry's power and coal industry department.

"I think that Kazakhstan needs this project. But the date of its implementation lies somewhere on the verge of 2015," Bertisbayev told a briefing in Astana on Tuesday.

"A nuclear power station requires vast investments, large-scale environmental and seismic research and an equipment safety study," he said.

"We would consider several variants. A working group headed by the prime minister is currently considering various aspects of the project," he said.
