HK population increases 24,000 in 2003
HONG KONG, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong population was 6,810, 100 at the end of 2003, representing an increase of 24,000, or 0.4 percent, over a year ago, according to the statistics released Tuesday by the Census and Statistics Department.
Obtained by subtracting the number of deaths of 36,500 from the number of births of 46,200, the natural increase of the population from the end of 2002 to the end of 2003 amounted to 9,700.
The overall population comprises a natural increase of 9,700 and a net movement of 14,300 residents. The ratio of natural increase to overall population increase was 40 percent, while that of net movement to overall population increase was 60 percent.
Hong Kong population is measured on the definition of resident population, which comprises usual residents and mobile residents. Among the total population at the end of 2003, 6,619,100 were usual residents, and 191,000 mobile residents.
The population figure does not include visitors. The number of visitors present in Hong Kong as at the end of 2003 was 298,600, said the Sensus and Statistics Department.
