Mar. 31--Personnel from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be conducting prescribed burns on Fish and Wildlife Service lands in the area between April 1 and June 15.
Specific tracts of land have been identified for burning in the following counties: Brown, Spink, McPherson, Edmunds and Campbell. The burns are associated with a wildlife management plan that will improve wildlife habitat, promote native prairie health and reduce invasive species, according to service officials. Future management plans for Waterfowl Production Areas include the use of prescribed fire and livestock to maintain a quality grassland habitat.
People living adjacent to these burn units will be notified in advance of any burning. For more information regarding the prescribed fire management programs, please call Tom Zick or Jay Peterson at Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, (605) 885-6320.
