Top Science Educators Honored By National Science Teachers Association

ARLINGTON, Va., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the world's largest organization of science educators, has announced the recipients of its 2006 Teacher Awards. The awards program honors K-12 teachers, professors, principals, and others for their outstanding achievement and innovative programs in science education. The awards will be presented at a special banquet and ceremony at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education taking place on April 6-9, 2006, in Anaheim.
NSTA will present its most prestigious award, the Robert H. Carleton Award for National Leadership in the Field of Science Education, to Dr. JoAnne Vasquez, a science education author and consultant from Gilbert, Arizona. She also is a member of the National Science Board and a former NSTA President.
Dr. Vasquez has spent more than 30 years making a difference in how science is taught to children. She has been an elementary teacher, an informal science education consultant, a district-level science resources teacher, a university adjunct professor, a curriculum writer, and a national staff developer. Her service to NSTA spans more than 20 years and includes serving on more than 10 committees, including conference planning committees, as well as leadership roles with the Executive Board and Council. She has presented sessions at every national conference since 1983. She currently works as an elementary science author, speaker, and facilitator of professional development.
