The European Commission has set maximum levels for dioxins and PCBs in food as fears grow in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, after pig and poultry feed was found to contain dioxin contaminated ingredients.
Dioxins and PCBs have toxic properties that can provoke a series of health problems, including cancer, immune and nervous system disorders, liver damage and sterility.
The discovery of the dioxin-laced pork was first reported by the Netherlands in January, by which time contaminated meat had been selling in the shops for nearly two months. The contamination resulted in dioxin levels 25 times the maximum permitted concentrations in pork fat.
The new regulation comes into effect in November 2006. After that time, any food or feed in which the sum of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs exceeds these maximum levels will not be allowed to be marketed in the EU.
