Lucent Technologies Expands Network Power Solution
CTIA 2006 LAS VEGAS — Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced the expansion of its network services business with a multivendor network power solution designed to help mobile and wireline operators reduce operational costs and improve network reliability.
Lucent will showcase the network power solution this week in its booth (#1806, Hall C3) at the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) Wireless 2006 show, taking place in Las Vegas.
Lucent’s network power solution offers customers a vast array of services including upgrades of existing network power infrastructure, removal of outdated equipment, and thorough and comprehensive audits and assessments of power and battery equipment. In addition, Lucent’s comprehensive power solution will help customers design and implement modernized, up-to-date and reliable power and communications networks, while helping to lower operational costs associated with procuring, deploying and maintaining power and battery gear. For mobile operators, Lucent’s network power solution helps ensure their infrastructure is powered efficiently and protected with premium battery and generator products, and it integrates well with Lucent’s site location and construction, rapid implementation and removal services to provide a complete network deployment solution.
As part of these expanded power services capabilities, Lucent also announced new and extended agreements with fourteen leading power supply and battery technology companies, thus enabling Lucent to offer a fully integrated, end-to-end suite of both power products and services.
The fourteen reseller and services agreements with power supply and battery manufacturers include: Argus(R) Technologies Inc.; BatteryCorp, Inc.; C&D Technologies, Inc.; Delta Group; East Penn Manufacturing Company Inc.; Eltek Energy, LLC; Emerson Network Power Energy Systems; EnerSys; GNB, Division of Exide Technologies; Power Battery Co. Inc.; Power-One Inc; Tectrol Inc.; Tyco Electronics Power Systems, Inc.; and Valere Power.
“Lucent’s network power solution is a natural extension of Lucent’s extensive experience in managing and maintaining the equipment needs of our customers’ networks globally,” said Jim Johnson, vice president of global maintenance and deployment services, Lucent Worldwide Services.
Lucent’s power services solution represents another milestone in Lucent’s expansion of its network power portfolio. After selling its power manufacturing business to Tyco International Inc. in 2000, Lucent re-entered the network power services market in January 2005. Lucent will not be manufacturing any power equipment as part of this services expansion, and will continue to work closely with Tyco and other suppliers to provide their products as part of comprehensive Lucent network power service and product solutions to our customers.
Cavalier Telephone LLC recently selected Lucent’s network power solution for network power infrastructure deployments in its Virginia offices. “We wanted the same quality and peace of mind as Lucent delivers with its switch deployments,” said Gary Timm, Cavalier’s Chief Technical Officer. “We are relying on Lucent’s power deployment solution to ensure our customers continue to receive reliable voice and data network services they expect.”
According to various industry reports, power system failures have become more frequent, last longer and more customers are being impacted. The Network Reliability Steering Committee Annual Report 2004 (Sponsored by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions, October 2005) shows that out of all network outages over the 12-year period of 1993-2004, 10 percent resulted from central office power outages. In 2004, the median duration of all central office power outages reached its highest level to date (5.5 hours), significantly higher than the median value (2.4 hours). During 2004, central office power outages also saw the highest-ever median value for customers potentially affected (111,800).
