Dirty Water at State Road School Behind District Annexation Plea

Apr. 4--The La Crosse School District will request that State Road School be annexed into La Crosse so it can connect to city water.
There's been something in the school's water for a decade -- coliform bacteria, iron and lead. It's fed by a 1969 well that has led to recurring problems -- smelly and, worse, unsafe drinking water.
Annexing from town of Shelby into La Crosse and connecting to city water mains would cost an estimated $66,000 and be complete by next school year, pending city approval.
Finding a new water source for the school had been included in the 2005-06 capital improvements budget at a cost of $76,800, Curt Murray, district supervisor of buildings and grounds, told the La Crosse School Board on Monday.
Murray said he'll contact city officials soon to discuss the project. "I don't expect any opposition, but it's a city decision," he said. Davy Engineering Co. of La Crosse prepared the bid for the district.
It would require the city to lay about 1,000 feet of water pipes below the adjoining Pammel Creek Road in front of the school, Murray said.
In other building news, the board approved a bid by Winona Heating and Ventilating Co. of Winona, Minn. to replace the Southern Bluffs Elementary gym roof, at a cost of $62,300, with an additional $9,000 contingency fund.
The project is in the 2006-07 capital improvements budget, but will be done this summer because the 1992 steel roof is badly corroded, Murray said.
