Apr. 5--KUWAIT -- Kuwait has officially taken delivery of the giant oil tanker Kazma 3 yesterday. Kazma 3 is part of the modern fleet of the Kuwait Oil Tanker Company which has embarked on a fleet renewal programme. The fleet will consist of nine tankers, in addition to a service ship and other facilities, which is expected to cost around $594 million.
The cost of Kazma 3 is estimated at $101 million. "This tanker was built in accordance with the modern international standards to match the operational needs of the company," said Nabeel Burisli, the Assistant General Manager for Planning at the KOTC.
The first tanker was received in 1959 which was called Kazma. The second was built in 1982 which also had the same name. The new tanker was called Kazma 3 to continue the same legacy, he said.
The launching ceremony took place at the Hyundai Shipbuilding yard in Southern Korea. From there, the tanker sailed to Kuwait with a Kuwaiti team of engineers and captains. "There are now about 42 marine engineers working on board of the company's tankers and others are working in the offices of the company," he added.
The company will receive the rest of the tankers in 2007. Kazma 3 tanker weighs 317,000 metric tonnes and is anchored at Ahmadi port now. It took 19 days for the tanker to reach Kuwait from Korea.
